“they suddenly recognize that God is a living, personal presence, not a piece of chiseled stone. and when God is personally present, a living Spirit, that old, constricting legislation is recognized as obsolete. we’re free of it! all of us! nothing between us and God, our faces shining with the brightness of his face. and so we are transfigured much like the Messiah, our lives gradually becoming brighter and more beautiful as God enters our lives and we become like him.” – 2 corinthians 3:16-18, the …

“o God, listen to my cry! hear my prayer! from the ends of the earth, i cry to you for help. when my heart is overwhelmed. lead me to the towering rock of safety, for you are my safe refuge” – psalm 61:1-3, NLT sometimes when i write about how hard life is here at the refuge, i wonder if i’m exaggerating.  then i go through a week like this last one and remember how real it is.  seriously, so many people struggling in different ways, some related to the …

“man does not live by bread alone.” luke 4:4 it’s the day after thanksgiving & my guess is a lot of us are still wearing our stretchy pants from yesterday.  all that food!  it was a great thanksgiving here with family & friends & even a rickety card table.  i do love our big open table every holiday! when i was thinking about formation friday earlier this week, this old post came to mind from lent 2009 called hunger. it also made me think of a book i …

“he has shown you, o mortal, what is good. and what does the Lord require of you? to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” – micah 6:8 it’s been a crazy week with a wild mix of refuge stuff & twins 13th birthday celebrations (we’ve now got 4 teenagers & one almost 21 year old!)  & a quick trip to pasadena & now today and tomorrow i’ll be at the denver faith & justice conference. looking forward to being with a bunch of …

when i was at denver seminary in the spiritual direction program i had to present a “Jesus encounter” as one of my class projects as a way for people to interact with Jesus experientially.  the passage i chose is one of my favorites–luke 7:36-50:, the sinful woman at simon the pharisee’s house.  it’s still one of my all-time favorites and here’s what it says: “one of the pharisees asked Jesus to have dinner with him, so Jesus went to his home and sat down to eat. …

formation friday: advocate

my husband jose is a pro-bono lawyer for domestic violence victims at a christian legal aid clinic in denver. his email is “jreadvocate” and whenever i email him (which is a lot; yes, we are those couples who sit across the living room from each other sending emails back and forth!) i think of how much i love that word. advocate. the definition is:  a person who speaks or writes in support or defense of a person or cause. when it comes to all-things-church i believe we need to make advocates not buildings.  we are supposed to …

last week, the day after i realized the refuge was so low on funds, i woke up depressed. in a fog, just weirded out and tired. right now we have several mommies who are either homeless or on the verge of it and it’s just complicated. on saturday morning, i dropped off the twins at their football game early and checked my emails while i was in the parking lot. in working on trying to find a possible temporary housing solution for one woman, i had …

“what comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” – a.w. tozer i’m not sure i completely agree with this quote but it does make me think.  it also makes sense why so many of our distorted and jacked up images of God have gotten us into so much trouble! i can’t remember if i wrote this here or somewhere else but i will always remember when i was at denver seminary and my spiritual formation group leader …
