Excellence wouldn't matter in the long run. He saw the futility of "winning" if the reason for winning was thinking it would "win" acceptance...that had to NOT be the reason they were debating well. They had to debate well because they were gifted to do so. They had to speak the truth excellently because it was in them as human beings. Someone actually told me a couple years ago that women must be perfect, exceptional in all their skills, or they wont be "accepted" as preachers and teachers. He said this like he was helping me; like ya, I was going to be motivated to "prove myself"... as if that was going to matter. Even if I achieved "greatness" in skill, among people who "don't belive in women pastor" it would merely be viewed as an interesting anecdote: "Wow....look at that woman preach. She sure is good. When is the right time for communism or for that matter consumerism or racism to come to an end. It turns out that there never is a right time.
